Sweet LG Watch Phone

The future is here people! Everyday we get close to full prosthetic bodies transplants and mechanized droid warfare, followed up by the zombie apocalypse. I can’t wait! While I dream about fighting off the zombie horde in my new prosthetic body while lodged into a bulky walking mechanized tank, I can appreciate the LG’s phone watch.

This small watch phone doesn’t just have the basic calling features every phone has. It also takes photos and video, has touch screen functionality and is Bluetooth enabled. Check out the video below for quick demo.

I like the plain interface. With a screen that small, there is no reason to get complicated with the UI.
Next step, holographic watches fit for Samus Aaron.

Sony Mylo Review

As Christmas is just around the corner, I wanted to start writing about some neat gadgets and gizmos that anyone in our nerdy culture could appreciate, yet might have looked over.

We will start off today by reviewing Mylo. The portable internet / media device by Sony.

Mylo stands for “My Life Online”, so this would lead one to believe that this device offers maybe some internet, maybe some instant messaging, and perhaps an RSS reader?

Well if you guessed all of the above, you are correct, but you sorely under estimated all of the available features on Mylo.

Mylo is a media monster. Yes it DOES have a web browser and AOL / Yahoo / Google Instant Messenger, but it also stores a library of other useful features such as Skype phone, Facebook, SHOUTcast Internet Radio, Youtube, downloadable Adobe Flash based games, MP3 music player, MPEG4 video player, Photo viewer, and built in camera.

Keep reading down below for the Pros and Cons.

Mylo Home Screenshot

The Pros:

1. As I stated before, Mylo is a media monster. Mylo is similar to your common media phone such as Blackberry or the iPhone, but with a cleaner interface and more focus features. Also instead of using a cell phone carrier service (AT&T, Verzion, T-Mobile, etc…) like a common cell phone, you have the ability to make phone calls with Skype (free).  The ability to use Skype is quite useful on the go. Everywhere I go generally has WiFi these days, it is great to use the Mylo to dial up a friend over Skype and avoid using up my cell phone minutes which I am already frugal with.

2. The ability to download and play flash games was pretty sweet. A lot of mobile devices offer few trial games and then you have to pay a over priced fee for a poorly made game. With Mylo, you can download games off Mylo’s official site or move downloaded SWF files (published Adobe Flash file) to your games folder on your Mylo.

3. Other perks include the MP3 & MPEG4 video player. Music and movies are easy to migrate to your Mylo. Once migrated, the media player can que up videos and music within 1-2 seconds.

Just a note, Mylo carries 1 Gig (enough to carry a couple hundred songs depending on file size) of on board storage with the ability to add more via Sony Duo Memory Card.

4. Widgets are a useful tool, giving you the ability to check out the hottest Youtube videos and login to Facebook among other things.

5. Mylo also comes with a built in 1.3 megapixel camera. The camera only takes a few seconds to turn on, and uses digital zoom.

6. Mylo uses a slide out full QWERTY Keyboard that doesn’t scrunch all the keys together and feels quite comfy when in use.

Mylo back

The Cons:

The downfalls of the Mylo aren’t anything that would turn a person away from using the device, but could occasionally make you sigh with disappointment. Here are a few of the things I ran into.

1. I wanted to post some picture of Mylo’s web browser on this article but I kept running into memory glitches with the browser. Now most of the other sites I jumped to loaded fine but Nerd Fellowship and a select few other sites for some reason wouldn’t load and kept running image memory errors. I ran into this issue with Sony’s PSP and their solution was to increase the available memory allowed to the browser. Unfortunately most people aren’t gonna know what the issue is and will brush it off as an un-fixable error.

2. Expanding your Mylo storage is as easy as sticking a memory card into the device, but since it’s a Sony product, a regular SD Card will not work. No, you need Sony’s Memory Duo card which is some what a pain, because now you have to run out and get a new memory card instead of using the small pile of SD cards most people have built up around in their house.

3. Having a built in camera with the Mylo is awesome, but with the low 1.3 megapixel picture quality won’t you give you any bragging rights when all your friends are taking pictures on their camera phone with 2.0 megapixel or higher. The photos are some what blurry and there is no built in flash.

4. WiFi…it’s a love hate thing. Yes, most WiFi is free, which makes using the Mylo all the better, but not every place you go will have WiFi. So if your in the car / restaurant / where ever…you maybe not be able to use all the features Mylo has to offer if there is no WiFi floating around.

Now we can’t blame Sony for this issue because they have nothing to do with the area you live / travel in.  But it is a CON none the less that everyone should be aware of.

Mylo top

Overall:

Mylo is a great media device for a young teen who is looking to listen to their MP3’s and chat on AIM / Skype and browse Youtube videos when they are away from a computer…or for the business minded adult who is constantly traveling from hotel to hotel and is looking to call his / her family (Skype) without using up cell phone minutes, as well as making use of all the great media features on the Mylo for those lengthy plane trips.

As I stated above, yes Mylo does depend on WiFi, and there will be times where WiFi is not available, but in the society we live in, WiFi access is only getting more and more accessible. Cities are already planning on offering city wide WiFi access.

I give the Mylo an 8/10. It makes a great gift for teens and young to mid-aged adults.

You can read up on Mylo at Sony’s product site by clicking HERE.

The Sony Mylo is available at Amazon.com.

Pioneer Introduces 400GB and 1TB Blu-Ray Disc

It’s true folks! Pioneer has  travelled to Superman’s Fortress of Solitude and transformed a shard of crystal material into a 400 GB Blu-Ray disc. The 400GB disc utilizes up to 16 layers (Blu-Ray currently uses 1-2 layers).

Ok, it’s not really from the fortress of solitude, but I like to think our technology comes from a long lost alien planet.

Blu-Ray Pioneer 400GB Disc

Pioneer has also stated that a 1 TERABYTE (almost enough to fit all my Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers fan fiction word docs.) is well on the way for 2013.

My question is, how many people will actually utilize that kind of disc space? Sure movies will now be even more jam packed with bonus content that no one will ever watch…but seriously…400GB? My two computers and an external hard disc combined don’t make up that amount of storage space. I am sure this opens up a new shiney door for bit torrent / pron trolls.

Ferrari Motorcycle is Love Child of Akira & Tron

Akira and Tron love child indeed. Just look at this Ferrari concept bike. It is so slick…maybe too slick? There is no seat cushion, and that means 2 things.

1. Your ass is gonna hurt after the first 10 minutes of riding this beast.

2. Better not wax your sitting area or you might find it hard to stay on your bike without gripping onto the handle bars for dear life.

Check out the photos

Does it come in burberry?

Micro SD: The Future of Hard Copy Music? Maybe

It might just be a MicroSD card you buy next time at the store instead of a CD whenever an album comes out.

So yeah, SanDisk is working on giving physical music sales (CDs) a bit of a boost, or at least hoping too with these new little sales devices. SanDisk has teamed up with a number of large music companies in the United States and began producing microSD flash cards with albums pre-loaded and DRM free.

SanDisk, Sony, Universal and EMI Music are hoping to renew slumping physical music sales as Digital Downloads (such as iTunes and Napster) have become more popular in the past few years.

Gee, I wonder why? It is just easier, for the most part, to download music from a legal source then it is to go out and buy a CD anymore. Though some people like collecting albums for the artwork, simply having a collection, or for use in cars and such, who’s gonna buy these? Where are they going to “plug in” to play at other than a computer, which then leads to you popping them on a cd anyway to play it in your car.

Upside to this though: these may not be anymore expensive then buying an album on iTunes would be, and to boot you have a nice MicroSD card.

A backlash against the high price of CDs figured prominently in the movement toward online music services, so the price of slotMusic will be crucial to its success. The cards must be priced no higher than what iTunes, Napster, and other online music services charge for an album.” -PCWorld-

In fact, with that statement these might actually be cheaper then purchasing them digitally, which might actually cause people to buy these instead of download songs. On top of that, for all you sound junkies out there, the bit rates pretty high on these songs, playing at 320 Kbps (not lossless audio, but pretty good for flash memory). The cards are also planned to contain album art (desktop backgrounds?), linear notes (might be sheet music, who knows), music videos and “other creative content the artist may choose” (whatever that means). So yeah, maybe they might actually be worth buying.

Will I buy them? Might buy one or two to check them out, but knowing how lazy I am, I’ll probably just hit-up my good old friend tagoo.ru

These will be available at Wal-Greens and Best Buy sometime in the future, release date hasn’t been announced as of yet, nor has a price been released. W00t.

The Polygon Playground, My 9th Grade Mathbook Manifested

Usually when I think of playgrounds, I think of bright sunny days with monkey bars and swing sets, or a Mary-Go-Round sitting on top of a surface of woodchips.

Apparently some people have a completely different vision as to how a playground looks.

I don’t think this “playground” had child’s safety in mind. Ha! It is probably more fitting for those who are in love with Tron and aren’t susceptible to seizures.

Pretty neat how it interacts with the enviorment.

Space Balls - The Animated Series

I am about to get another hit to my Nerd cred for this post.

Space Balls was a 1987 Star Wars parody that has earned a huge cult following, but I never really cared to much for it. I have watched it about 3-4 times and I still can’t appreciate it.

So I wasn’t enthusiastic by any means when I saw the preview for the animated series of Space Balls. There is one thing that caught my attention, and no it wasn’t the ridiculous amount of breast jokes they put in the preview. What caught my attention is that the show appears to be animated in Adobe Flash. I can’t confirm it, but I am good at spotting flash produced shows out, and I am 98% sure flash had a hand in this show.

Check it out.

The show will start running on G4 September 21st. Now although I am not looking forward to it by any means, it should fill up sometime time slots on G4 and hopefully eliminate more air time for the ninja shows they always have on, or Cops and Cheaters.

E-Ink: The Future of Overpriced Magazines

Folks, the geniuses in the magazine print biz have done it! The first published E-Ink cover was released under Esquire magazine. “What is E-Ink?” you say? I will tell you!

E-Ink is an eletronic paper that contains both white and black particles. When a positive charge is sent to a particular black particle, it changes over to white, and vice versa with negative charge changing white to black. The technology  has been around for some time now, as you might of seen it in cellphones and various e-book reading devices.

Check out the video below to see E-Ink in use with an actual magazine!

E-Ink could change the way people read magazines, and by read I mean watch. Although not that much can be done besides basic animations. It is good for ad purposes, but do you really want to pay more for Abercrombie’s 3 frame animation of some model dude pulling his pants down?

MulitiTouch Cell Technology, For People Who Like to Touch

This touch screen technology sure is all the rage. Now everyone wants to wipe their greesey mits all over shiny phone screens and over priced coffee tables, but what they haven’t though about molesting is a set of LCD screens coupled together. Picturing stacking LCDs on top of each other and dragging an object from one screen to the other with ease. Well that is what the company “MultiTouch” aims to do.

Their technology allows for for touch recognition between multiple screens with multiple users interaction possible at one time.

Check out the video.

I can’t wait for these demo videos like MultiTouch and Microsoft Table start showing other crap besides blowing up your photo album on screen. Lets actually see something useful. I mean come on, how often do you really browse through your “My Pictures” folder? Yeah…that is what I thought.

Another Thursday, Another Doomsday Device

The Large Hadron Collider is set to turn this world into a living combine hell next week, but that doesn’t distract us from other shiny doomsday devices like the Large Helical Device. I have no clue what it does, because while reading about it my eyes grew tired, but it looks “SUPER FRESH YO!”.

Check out this trippy image of the device. Although I have no clue what the hell I am looking at, I am going to assume it is a secret level in the next Tony Hawk skateboard game or maybe a level in Mario Kart.

What does this thing do again? Makes black hole flavored ice cream?
