First Look at Star Wars: The Old Republic

So lately, there’s been talk of a new MMO coming out based on Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The new game from developer Bioware, takes place about three hundred years after the KOTOR I and II games. The game will feature a different kind of art style which won’t be totally realistic but at the same time won’t be very cartoonish either.

As shown here:

The idea behind this type of art work is that they want a type of artwork that sets this game apart from other MMO’s. Also, the theory is that this way they will be able to run the game on many different machines without sacrificing graphics.

Another thing that I found interesting in Kotaku’s article on this was that the game is going to be very story oriented. Unlike other games which just have missions for the sake of missions, this game is going to have stories set by classes. Every class will have its own unique story that can be played out in various ways. No two people will have the same story this way, at least in theory.

You also get a companion character or a few of them throughout the game and you the way you make your choices influences the way the characters around you react. They’ll either encourage your behavior or flip out when you do something like if you were to say, Force Lightning a character to death.

Also the game will tie up some loose ends from the first two games, if you’re looking for it. Bioware doesn’t want to rub that in people’s faces if they’ve never played them before.

As per the true KOTOR way, you’re neither good or evil in the beginning. You choose a faction off the bat: Republic or Sith. And from there your choices throughout the game will ultimately influence your path to the light or the dark sides.

I’m really looking forward to this game coming out and I hope you are too. As always faithful readers, keep it here for more information on The Old Republic. Same Nerd Fellowship time, same Nerd Fellowship channel.

SW: The Force Unleashed - New Downloadable Content

Good news for those who went out and got Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, there will be some downloadable content coming soon that will expand the gameplay a bit more.

Next month, console owners will be able to download at least 4 new character costumes / skins. These new characters are rather exciting  and happen to be Luke Skywalker, Obi Wan Kenobi, Ki-Adi-Mundi, and Kit Fisto.

That’s not all folks! Another download will be available before the end of 2008 that will offer a new level to play upon. The level will be set in the Jedi Temple that Star Killer visited on the planet Coruscant.

SW: TFU developers also stated that more DLC could be coming within time that would add upon the game such as new levels and an expanded story.

All Star Wars: The Forc Unleashed downloadable content will be PS3 / X360 exclusive.

Poll: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed - Good or Bad?

As most of you know, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed came out yesterday on all the consoles (and hand held gaming devices), and from what I have seen across the web, it has been getting mixed reviews. A lot are saying the story is great but the game play lacks reply value. I just wanted to get the community’s thoughts. So answer the poll below and discuss the game in our forums by clicking here.

*Note* I am talking specifically about the console versions PS3 / Xbox 360

After playing Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, what's your opinion on the game?

The Force Unleashed on PS2 and PSP

When it comes to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed the PS3 and Xbox 360 might be able to brag about being next gen, but PS2 and PSP can brag about having more features from the start and having different kinds of cool stuff in the game.

Here are two videos that shows us the difference that the PS2 and PSP will have. Enjoy!

I would like to have the PSP final part in the PS3 or Xbox 360, because I’m sure that could even make a big hit for the specific console, but of course we can’t give everything to all of them. Even with perks for the PS2 or the PSP, I’ll be getting one for my next gen gaming system.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars Movie Review

George Lucas must be feeling the burn after this movie. Even the most forgiving movie goers are wishing they would have waited for this to premier 3 years down the road on a public TV station like ABC. *sigh*

Plot: SW: TCW takes place in between Episodes 2 and 3, and chronicles the adventures of Anakin Skywalker (now called Sky Guy) and his padawan Ahsoka Tano as they race to save Jabba the Hut’s son from Count Dooku and company. Doing so will prevent Jabba the Hut from joining the Separatists side of Dooku and allowing the Republic to safely travel through Jabba’s controlled territory, which gives them an advantage in battling the Separatist.

The Good: For all the bad things that I am about to mention below, there are a few good points that stand out for the film. Such as the unique visuals that were adapted from the Clone Wars cartoon. The visuals were breathe of fresh air from the typical CG visuals that you see coming out of the cookie cutter animal based cartoons.

And of course it is a SW movie, so the light saber battles and star ships are enough to keep anyone entertained and is the only thing that saves this movie from failure of epic proportions.

The Bad: So yeah, SW: The Clone Wars, what happened. I will tell you what happened. George and company are trying to get these young kids attached to the SW universe. The only problem is that they forgot their loyal legion of fans who salivated over the films and traded their dignity to dress up as their favorite Jedi and swing around plastic light sabers. They forgot all those fans were still alive, and would be coming to see this movie.

I get that Star Wars is a huuugggeee franchise that will keep on making money as long as there are lasers, space ships, and light sabers (and yoda), and I understand marketing it to a younger generation to keep the cash cow pumping gold. But you can’t expect to transform an epic universe like star wars from a mature franchise to a kid’s saturday morning cartoon and have to fly with the fan base. It is like they learned nothing from the thousands of voices crying out over Jar Jar Binks and kid Anakin.

My personal grudges against the film are the characters. Particularly  Anakin and his padawan Ahsoka. The chemistry between the two is like watching an episode of Gilmore Girls. It’s nothing but the two trading insults and insecurities. It got to be to much for me. I got really annoyed after the first half hour of hearing Ahsoka cry about not getting respected they way she thought she should due to her young age. Probably the worst part was Ahsoka calling Anakin “Sky Guy”. If I was Anakin, I would have back handed her with the force. A FORCE SLAP!

Who ever came up with “sky guy” needs to commit sepuku with a light saber.

I can rant on forever about this film, but the overall problem is that the characters suck. Plain and simple. To dramatic, to negative, there is nothing worth hearing out of any of the main character’s mouths. The Droids had better dialogue.

Overall: If you have to see SW: TCW, make sure it is by rental only. It is not worth seeing in theaters, and it is not worth a buy outside of trying to complete your SW DVD collection. I actually went to see it twice in theaters.

The problems will probably bother the hell out of you, but if you can manage to sit through it, you might be able to enjoy the action.

Make Your Own Boba Fett Helmet Out of Cardboard

Boba Fett, one of the baddest motha’s you can dress up as for during Halloween, nerd conventions, or just sitting in your room pwning nublets in Counter Strike. But of course you can’t get the Boba Fett gear without coughing up some dough… unless you just so happen to work in an arts and crafts warehouse where boxes of card board are thrown out every day along with un-used paints and brushes. If you happen to be that warehouse monkey that so desires to dress up as Boba Fett, but are to cheap to buy the gear, then your in luck!

A tutorial has been posted on instructables.com with the details on creating your own Boba Fett helmet out of card board. It includes PDF templates that you can print out and construction images.

Force Unleashed iPhone Demo

If someone approached me yesterday and said “Hey Rob, how do you think SW:TFU is going to play on the iPhone?”, I probably would have said something like “that sounds like a really bad idea”. Well 5 minutes ago I watched the demo video of SW:TFU on the iPhone, and I don’t think it is such a bad idea after watching it.

Take a look

The game isn’t playing like the 360 or PS3 version of course, its more like a cinematic game. But it works perfectly for the iPhone. What I am curious about is how much of the story will be revealed in this game. Will the cut scenes and story play out almost identical to the console version? Well I will be playing both version when it comes out, so I will let you know how both compare.

Don’t Mess With Star Wars - Ads

It’s plain and simple folks. We have seen the example over and over again. You just don’t f— with Vader or any sith lord for that matter.

Also, don’t f— with Boba Fett. The dude has got a jet pack that shoots a stand alone rocket.

Tusken Raiders, I still think I could take them on without the force.

A HA! Ewoks aren’t to be played with.

Obviously you can tell by now that these are all commercials for Spike TV’s premier of Star Wars.

I am a sucker for anything that involves Star Wars characters acting out of their universe and our of character.

Jedi’s Gym - Vader Cancels Your Membership for Life

Down on your luck? Tired of running to the same boring YMCA everyday after work? Looking to find a place where you can practice your jedi lightsaber play? Well then look no further! Then join the Jedi Gym.

The Bad: As far as I know, no Jedi Gym exist. Shame, I am sure it would be a great place to nerd out on sharing your own Star War’s fan fictions.

The Good: No Jedi Gym means the chances of Darth Vader slaughtering you and commrades in the middle of meditation is slightly reduced.
